Discovery Pico Laser in Corona, CA

Discovery Pico delivers energy in picoseconds — trillionths of a second. Pulses that short shatter pigment mechanically rather than by heating it, and that difference is why this laser can do things older devices can’t.

We use it for melasma, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and tattoo removal.

Melasma — the reason this laser matters

If you have melasma, you have probably been told there isn’t much to be done.

There’s a reason for that. Melasma is heat-sensitive, and most pigment treatments work by heating the pigment — which is why so many of them make melasma worse rather than better. Patients come to us having tried things that darkened the very patches they were trying to fade.

Because Pico works in picoseconds, it breaks pigment apart with minimal heat. That’s what makes it one of the few devices that can approach melasma without provoking it.

We’ll still be honest with you: melasma is a chronic condition. It’s driven by hormones and sun as much as by the pigment itself, and it can return. Treatment manages it well — it doesn’t cure it, and anyone promising otherwise isn’t being straight with you.

What else we treat

Hyperpigmentation — sun damage, age spots, post-inflammatory marks left behind by acne.

Fine lines and wrinkles — the same pulses that shatter pigment also prompt collagen remodeling, so texture improves alongside tone.

Tattoo removal — see our tattoo removal page for how that works.

Pico or IPL?

Both treat pigmentation, and patients reasonably ask which they need.

Pigmentation only, and no melasma? An IPL photofacial is usually the simpler answer — shorter downtime and fewer sessions.

Pigmentation plus fine lines and wrinkles? Pico, because it treats both at once rather than making you choose.

Melasma? Pico. IPL isn’t appropriate.

We own both machines, so what we recommend depends on your skin rather than on what’s sitting in the room.

Sessions and downtime

Three to six sessions, depending on what we’re treating and how aggressive we decide to be. We’ll give you a number at your consultation rather than a package you’re locked into.

Downtime depends on the treatment:

  • Melasma and pigmentation — about three days of redness
  • Fine lines and wrinkles — up to a week, since we treat more aggressively for texture

Plan around anything you’d be photographed for. This is real downtime, not the “you’ll be a little pink” kind.

Who shouldn’t have it

Not for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with an active infection or open skin at the treatment site, anyone recently tanned, or anyone on a medication that causes light sensitivity.

Bring your complete medication and supplement list — some medications change how skin responds to laser.
