Wegovy (semaglutide) tablets are the first GLP-1 pill approved for weight loss — FDA-approved in December 2025 and available since January 2026. At Slender Me Medical in Corona, we prescribe it as part of a supervised membership program, with weekly check-ins, direct access to your provider, and your prescription sent wherever you choose: the manufacturer’s self-pay program or your own pharmacy.
What Oral Wegovy Is
Oral Wegovy is semaglutide in tablet form — the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, taken once daily by mouth instead of weekly by needle. It is approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
It is also approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events — death, heart attack, or stroke — in adults with known heart disease who also have obesity or excess weight. That makes it a meaningful option for patients whose weight and cardiac risk are tied together.
Tablets come in 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg strengths. Treatment starts low and steps up gradually.
What the Studies Showed
In the OASIS 4 trial, 307 adults with obesity took oral semaglutide 25 mg or placebo for 64 weeks:
- 16.6% average weight loss among patients who stayed fully adherent, versus 2.7% for placebo
- 13.6% average weight loss across all participants regardless of adherence, versus 2.2% for placebo
- Roughly one in three adherent patients lost 20% or more of their body weight
That is comparable to what the Wegovy injection produced in its own trials. The pill is not a weaker version of the shot.
Notice the gap between those two numbers, though: 16.6% with full adherence versus 13.6% overall. That difference is not about the drug. It is about whether people take it correctly and stay on it — which is the entire reason our program is built the way it is.
The Part Nobody Explains Well
Oral Wegovy has to be taken on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, with no more than about four ounces of plain water — then you wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medications.
This is not optional fussiness. Semaglutide in tablet form is absorbed poorly, and food or extra liquid in the stomach blocks it. Patients who take it with coffee, or with breakfast, or alongside their other morning pills, often conclude the medication does not work for them. It was simply never absorbed.
We walk you through this at your first visit and check in on it weekly, because it is the single most common reason an oral GLP-1 fails.
Important Safety Information
Semaglutide may cause thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Do not take Wegovy if you or any family member has ever had MTC, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Tell your provider about any lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, usually when starting or increasing the dose. Wegovy should not be used with other semaglutide-containing products or other GLP-1 medications.

Pill or Injection?
Both contain semaglutide and both work. The honest comparison:
- The pill is daily, needs the empty-stomach routine, requires no refrigeration, and suits people who travel, dislike needles, or have nowhere private to inject.
- The injection is once weekly with no timing rules around food, but must be kept refrigerated.
Neither is better in the abstract. The right one is whichever fits your life well enough that you actually stay on it for a year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the pill as effective as the shot?
In trials, oral semaglutide at 25 mg produced weight loss comparable to the injection. Both contain the same medication. Adherence matters more than the format.
How is it different from Foundayo?
Both are daily GLP-1 pills. Oral Wegovy showed greater average weight loss in its trials, but requires the empty-stomach routine. Foundayo can be taken any time of day with or without food but showed more modest results. We will talk through which suits you.
What if I forget and eat breakfast first?
Skip that day’s dose rather than taking it with food, and tell us if it is happening often. We would rather adjust the routine than have you take a medication that is not being absorbed.
How much does the medication cost?
It depends on your dose and whether you use insurance. Self-pay pricing through the manufacturer starts well below the injection, and commercial insurance with a savings card can bring it lower still. We will go over your actual numbers before you commit to anything.
Do I have to come in every week?
Weekly check-ins are part of what makes the program work, but they can be in-office or virtual depending on your schedule.
Can I switch from the injection to the pill?
Often, yes, and the reverse as well. Any switch is planned and supervised, since the two should never overlap.
