What Wegovy Is
Wegovy is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, given as a once-weekly injection. It is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
It works by reducing appetite, slowing stomach emptying, and helping you feel full on less food. It has been in wide clinical use for several years, which means both its benefits and its side effects are well characterized.
It Also Protects Your Heart
Wegovy is approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events — cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke — in adults with known heart disease who also have obesity or excess weight.
That matters more than it sounds. It means this is not only a weight medication for some patients; it is a cardiovascular one. If you have established heart disease alongside your weight, that indication can also change the insurance conversation, because plans that exclude weight loss will sometimes cover a cardiovascular indication.
What the Studies Showed
In its main weight management trial, adults taking semaglutide 2.4 mg lost an average of about 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared with roughly 2.4% for placebo.
A higher-dose version is now available for patients who need more than the standard maintenance dose and tolerate it well. Whether that is appropriate for you depends on your response and how you handle the medication.
Individual results vary considerably, and factors beyond the medication contribute to weight loss.
Injection or Pill? Wegovy or Zepbound?
You have four real options here and they are genuinely different. The honest comparison:
- Wegovy injection — once weekly, no timing rules around food, the longest track record, and the cardiovascular indication. Needs refrigeration.
- Oral Wegovy — the same medication as a daily tablet, with comparable results, but it must be taken on an empty stomach with a 30-minute wait before eating.
- Zepbound — a different molecule that acts on two receptors rather than one. In a head-to-head trial it produced greater average weight loss than injectable Wegovy. Also approved for sleep apnea.
- Foundayo — a daily pill with no food or timing restrictions at all, with more modest average results.
Greater average weight loss in a trial does not automatically make a medication the right one for you. Tolerance, cost, coverage, needle preference and what you will realistically stay on for a year all matter. That is the conversation we have at your consultation.
Important Safety Information
Semaglutide may cause thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Do not take Wegovy if you or any family member has ever had MTC, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Tell your provider about any lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, usually when starting or increasing the dose. Wegovy should not be used with other semaglutide-containing products or other GLP-1 medications.

How It Is Taken
One injection per week, on the same day each week, with or without food, into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. The needle is very short and most patients find it far less unpleasant than they expected. It requires refrigeration.
Dosing starts low and steps up over several months. Reaching an effective dose without being derailed by side effects is the part most patients find difficult alone, and it is the part we manage with you week by week.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is Wegovy different from Ozempic?
Both contain semaglutide. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is approved for weight management and reaches a higher dose. They are not interchangeable and coverage differs.
Should I choose the injection or the pill?
The injection is weekly with no food rules but needs refrigeration. The pill is daily and must be taken on an empty stomach with a wait before eating. Both work — pick the one you will actually keep doing.
Is Zepbound better?
In a direct trial it produced greater average weight loss. But Wegovy has the cardiovascular indication and a longer track record, and individual response varies. Neither is universally better.
Does insurance cover it?
Coverage varies widely and most plans require prior authorization. If you have established heart disease, the cardiovascular indication may open a path that weight loss alone does not. We will help you work out where you stand.
What if the nausea is bad?

What happens if I stop?
Weight regain is common after stopping any GLP-1, which is why we plan for maintenance rather than treating this as a short course. We will talk about the long view at the start, not at the end.
