Testosterone Therapy

Low testosterone is common, under-diagnosed, and very treatable. At Slender Me Medical in Corona, we treat it properly — real lab work, physician-supervised treatment, and ongoing monitoring rather than a prescription and a wave goodbye.

Symptoms of Low Testosterone

Testosterone declines gradually with age, and symptoms arrive slowly enough that most men attribute them to something else — work, stress, getting older.

  • Persistent fatigue that sleep does not fix
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Erectile difficulty
  • Loss of muscle mass and strength despite training
  • Increased body fat, particularly around the middle
  • Low mood, irritability, or a flat feeling
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Poor sleep

Any one of these has other explanations. Several together are worth investigating.

Diagnosis Requires Labs — Properly Done

Low testosterone is not diagnosed from symptoms. It requires blood work, and the details matter more than most men are told.

Testosterone follows a daily rhythm and peaks in the morning, so the draw should be done early. A single low result is not enough — levels fluctuate, and confirmation on a second morning sample is the standard. We also look at free testosterone, LH and FSH, estradiol, prolactin, and a complete blood count, because the pattern tells us whether the problem originates in the testes or the pituitary. That changes the treatment.

We check thyroid function and screen for sleep apnea as well. Both cause symptoms that look identical to low testosterone, and treating the wrong thing helps nobody.

Two Ways to Treat It

Most clinics offer one. Which is right for you depends heavily on whether you may want children, and that question should be asked before treatment starts — not after.

Testosterone Program — replacement therapy

Replaces what your body is no longer making enough of. Available as weekly or twice-weekly injections, daily topical gels, or long-acting pellets placed under the skin every few months.

Injections give the most control over levels and are the most economical. Gels are needle-free but require care to avoid transferring to a partner or child through skin contact. Pellets are the most convenient and the least adjustable once placed.

This is the right choice for most men who are finished having children and want the most direct, best-established route to feeling like themselves again.

Fertility-Preserving Hormone Program

Rather than replacing testosterone from outside, this approach signals your pituitary to increase your body’s own production. Because the testes stay active, sperm production is preserved.

Many men are never told this option exists. It is worth understanding before you choose, because the alternative is not easily undone.

Why it matters: testosterone therapy suppresses your body’s own production and reduces sperm count, often substantially. For some men that causes infertility which does not fully reverse after stopping. If children are a possibility for you now or later, this is the conversation to have first.

What you should know: this approach is not FDA-approved for raising testosterone, and the medication is compounded — prepared individually for you rather than manufactured as an approved product. It is not appropriate for every man, and whether it suits you depends on what your labs show about where the problem originates. We will explain exactly what that means for your situation before you decide anything.

Addressing the cause instead

Excess weight, untreated sleep apnea, heavy alcohol use and certain medications all lower testosterone. In some men, treating those raises levels without hormone therapy at all. We would rather find that than put you on lifelong treatment you did not need.

In-Office or Telehealth

We treat patients in person at our Corona clinic, and by telehealth in states where we hold the required licensure and controlled substance registration.

Testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance, which means where and how it can be prescribed is regulated more tightly than most medications. Not every clinic can treat you remotely, and not every state permits it. Tell us where you live and we will give you a straight answer about what we can do.

Telehealth patients get the same lab work, the same monitoring schedule, and the same provider — the difference is where the visit happens, not the standard of care.

Monitoring Is Not Optional

Testosterone therapy requires ongoing supervision, and this is where a lot of men get poor care.

We monitor your testosterone level to keep you in range rather than above it, your hematocrit because testosterone thickens the blood and can raise clotting risk, your PSA and prostate health, and your estradiol, since testosterone converts to estrogen and too much causes its own problems.

A clinic that writes the prescription and does not recheck your blood is not managing your care. Ask anyone offering you testosterone how often they run labs.

Important Safety Information

Testosterone therapy is not appropriate for men with prostate cancer or male breast cancer. It requires caution in men with significant heart disease, untreated sleep apnea, or an elevated red blood cell count.

Possible effects include acne, fluid retention, breast tenderness, worsened sleep apnea, thickened blood, and reduced sperm production. Topical forms can transfer to others through skin contact.

This page is general information, not medical advice. What is appropriate for you is decided at your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my testosterone is low?

Blood work, drawn in the morning and confirmed on a second sample. Symptoms alone are not enough, and neither is one borderline result.

Will testosterone therapy affect my fertility?

Yes. It suppresses sperm production, sometimes permanently. If children are a possibility for you, tell us before we start — our fertility-preserving option exists precisely for this.

Can I switch between the two approaches?

In some cases, yes, though it is far simpler to choose correctly at the start than to recover fertility afterward. This is why we ask early.

Can I do this by telehealth?

In some states, yes. Testosterone is a controlled substance, so telehealth prescribing depends on where you live and on the registrations we hold there. Tell us your state and we will give you a straight answer.

Injections, gel, or pellets?

Injections offer the most control and cost the least. Gels avoid needles but can transfer to others by skin contact. Pellets are the most convenient and the hardest to adjust. We will help you choose.

How long before I feel different?

Libido and energy often shift within weeks. Body composition changes take months. Anyone promising a transformation in days is selling something.

Do I stay on it forever?

Often, yes, if the cause is not reversible. If it is — weight, sleep apnea, a medication — treating that may raise your levels without ongoing therapy.

Do you take insurance?

We are a cash-pay practice. Your labs may be billable to insurance and we will discuss costs openly before you commit.

Ready to find out where your levels are?

Book a consultation at our Corona clinic or by telehealth. We start with a conversation and proper lab work, and we will tell you honestly if testosterone is not what you need.
